“For if we believe…”
“For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen asleep.” (1 Thess 4:14)
We have had a week of Prize Givings and Masses of Thanksgiving for our Colleges as the senior students came to the end of their classes and now prepare for exams. For the Year 13s and leavers this moment is also for preparing to step out into life that awaits.
It was moving to see students whom I have known since they were wee now stepping forward as young adults. There is much to reflect upon when we consider life over the context of passing years.
The first parish I was appointed to after ordination was St Mary’s Parish, Nelson. And I returned there at another time to serve as Parish Priest. This was an experience of seeing young ones growing in wisdom and statue, as well as seeing older ones entering greater years, while, naturally, there were also parishioners of any age who entered the halls of heaven, where there is a place for everyone.

Now, when I get to Nelson, and celebrate Mass with St Mary’s, most of the parishioners in the pews I do not know. If I desire to be among familiar names, I will see them at Marsden Valley Cemetery where they have a ‘Catholic section’ on the side of the hill, with a most beautiful view of Nelson Bay. It’s a privilege and a joy to walk along the rows recalling faces, and families, sadnesses and celebrations. There, where others see death, we recognise life. Yes, and there in the silence, with warm sun and gentle breeze the gift of faith enables conversations to continue, now in prayer. In this month of November our prayer resounds,
“Eternal rest grant to them O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace.”
Patrick
