Eucharist
The word “Eucharist” means thanksgiving, and that best describes the action by which Catholic are called to worship God. Conscious that all we have and are, results from the generosity of God, giving thanks becomes a priority. For Catholics, the public act of thanksgiving is usually called the Mass.
We gather :
- to remember the great actions of God in creating and in gifting the world with Jesus,
- to give thanks for such great love,
- to recall the “passion, death and resurrection” of Jesus,
- to share the gift of Jesus with one another at “the Table of the Lord”,
- to accept being sent, to go out “to announce the Gospel of the Lord”.
Eucharist is also another name for Communion, which is part of the Mass – the action of receiving the “Body and Blood of Christ” under the appearance of bread and wine.
Children an admitted to the Communion rite from about the age of eight or when their parents consider them to be ready.
