Choosing Love with Wisdom
This weekend we celebrate Valentine’s Day. We share flowers, cards and kind messages with loved ones. It is a beautiful reminder that love matters. Yet the readings this Sunday invite us to look at love in a deeper way.
We are reminded that life is full of choices. “Fire and water are set before you; put out your hand to whichever you prefer.” God has given us the freedom to choose how we live and how we love each other. Every day we choose our words, our attitudes and our actions. Love is not only a feeling; it is a decision.
Jesus teaches us that love begins in the heart. It is not enough simply to avoid doing wrong outwardly. Anger, harsh words and dishonesty can damage relationships just as much as visible actions. When Jesus says, “All you need say is Yes if you mean yes, No if you mean no,” he is inviting us to live with sincerity and integrity. True love is honest, respectful and faithful. It chooses patience, forgiveness and kindness even when it is difficult.
God’s wisdom is different from the wisdom of the world. The world can sometimes reduce love to romance, appearance or temporary emotion. But God shows us a love that is deeper and lasting. It is the love Christ revealed through humility and sacrifice. It is a love that seeks the good of the other person and remains steady even in challenging times.
God never commands us to do wrong. Instead, he invites us to choose life. When we choose love rooted in God’s wisdom, our relationships grow stronger and our hearts become freer.
On this Valentine’s weekend, we might gently ask ourselves: What kind of love am I choosing? Is my love patient? Is it forgiving? Is it truthful? Am I choosing words that build up rather than tear down?

May we choose love each day, not only in small gestures, but in the quiet decisions of the heart. That is the love that truly lasts.
