A Warm Welcome

Sacred Heart Cathedral plays an important part in the life of the city of Wellington and of New Zealand. For the Catholic community, it is a sacred space.

The Cathedral houses the cathedra (seat) of Archbishop Paul Martin SM, Archbishop of Wellington. It is the Metropolitan Cathedral of New Zealand.

Whilst its importance for Catholics cannot be overstated, this Cathedral is an important part of New Zealand history and a fine example of the architectural style of noted architect Francis Petre. It’s a historic and architectural gem worth protecting.

The Cathedral is a place of beauty which inspires many. Here you will find a place of spiritual enrichment and a warm welcome whether you come here for worship, a pilgrimage, a concert, or time out from the busy city life. It is a sanctuary – a home, open to all.

We are in the final stages of an important restoration project, a project has seen the Cathedral re-opened after five years of earthquake strengthening and other interior and exterior works.

As we open the doors once again, we continue to need your help. We ask that you support our Cathedral Restoration Campaign and finish what was entrusted to us. ✟
