A Child Is Born to Us!
Recently, we celebrated the baptism of wee Mikael Leon. So small, thankfully so content, like the little Lord Jesus no crying did he make! Even with the water pouring over his head, he slept soundly, only slightly rousing as applause welcomed him into our family of faith.
It is a precious moment to hold a baby. And when it has been a while since holding a babe, then the nervousness as baby is passed can be a little nerve racking. Making sure his head and neck are supported. Holding him close so that he feels secure, but not too tight which could make him uncomfortable causing him to wake.
A baby allows us to be aware of vulnerability. The vulnerability not only of the newborn, also the vulnerability of us all.
Soon people will gather with families, with friends, and some on their own. It is good to recognise that in recognising our vulnerabilities, and that all people have vulnerability, then as we are careful in holding a baby, so we are called to gentle with each other and with ourselves.
In the scriptures we hear that God was not in the mighty wind, nor in the earthquake, rather in the gentle breeze. God came into our midst not on a golden chariot with great horses coming from the sky. No, God came into our midst just as we came into the world. He came from his mother’s womb needing immediate care, concern, love, just as each of us needed.
And care, concern and love are still needed by us all. Jesus needed and received such care, concern, and love in his life. Even in his Passion his brow was wiped clean. Yes, and he remained vulnerable to the realities of his day, which meant his message was greeted with joy by some, and fear by others which lead to his death and then to his Resurrection!
How would it be if we treated each other, and all people, with the care we do a baby? Recognising everyone’s dignity as our first response, and then with that in mind then encountering them in the joys and sorrows, the challenges and good times of life.

Happy Christmas to all! It is such a privilege to be here with you at Sacred Heart. It is a beautiful family to part of! May we all be blessed by the newborn Jesus with hope and joy!
Prayers, Patrick
