Christus vincit! Christus regnat! Christus imperat!
When He was asked what is the greatest commandment, our Lord Jesus Christ replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)
Today we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. We are invited to enthrone Him at the centre of our hearts and actions; calling us to live in accordance with His teachings, to promote justice and peace, and to serve others with humility and love.
Our Lord continued his answer: “The second most important commandment is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself.” (Matthew 22:39)
In this Feast of Christ the King, we celebrate and recognise that our Lord is king in the Kingdom of God in which we already live. As Christians, we are called to witness to the Kingdom of God in the world (Acts 1:8). We are called to advocate for the dignity of all, to work towards the common good, and to stand against injustices. Paraphrasing the explanation of Gerald Darring (St Louis University, Centre for Liturgy):
“The Kingdom of God is a space. It exists in every loving home; in every country that cares for the vulnerable and the weak; and in every parish that goes out to the peripheries and reaches out to those in need.
The Kingdom of God is a time. It happens when someone feeds the hungry, shelters the homeless, or cares for the neglected. It happens when justice prevails; when people fight for social justice, and when people pass on the Faith.
The Kingdom of God is in the past, in the life and work of our Lord; it is in the present, in the work of the Church and in the efforts of many to create a world of goodness and justice; it is in the future reaching its completion in the age to come.
The Kingdom of God is a condition. Its symptoms are love, justice, and peace.”
The Kingdom of God here, now, around us, amongst us.
Christ conquers! Christ rules! Christ reigns!
